Wherefore ART thou?

Celebrating Shakespeare 2016

2016 marks 400 years since the death of William Shakespeare. Libraries all over the country have commissioned artists to celebrate his life work.

Bring the kids out for drawing and character building fun! Literally … or is that Literary? Art Hoppers are dreaming up their own interpretations of Shakespearean characters with the help of local kids. Imagine, draw and make your own quirky mask which allows you to perform beside your favourite character. (Dulwich Library)

Alternatively, engage closer to Shakespeares’s home in Hackney where we’ll be creating some of the more iconic lines from Shakespearean plays in calligraphic style, or try your hand at recreating a model of the Globe Theatre and various lollipop players (both at Shoreditch Library).

All sessions:

For 4 – 11 yr olds / Materials will be provided / No need to book / FREE to attend.

We’re very happy to be visiting Dulwich Library in Southwark in addition to our local Hackney libraries. Looking forward to seeing you all!

Following a successful grant application to Arts Council England, the Society of Chief Librarians and partners were awarded a budget to celebrate Shakespeare’s 400th anniversary year in libraries across England.

The bulk of this funding was used to commission artists, writers and performers to work with libraries on Shakespeare-related events and activities (for children, young people and adults) between May and October 2016.

A number of high-profile partners ensured maximum reach and impact including: the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, Association of Children’s and Education Librarians, The Reading Agency, Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals, BBC Learning, Booksellers’ Association, British Library and Royal Shakespeare Company.
